Objective To analyze the causes of amputation and investigate proper amputation opportunity and treatment method of severe trauma with extremities. Methods Retrospective study involving 27 patients receiving different limbs amputation who had admitted to our hospital from October 2008 to June 2011 was conducted. The causes of amputation were analyzed and the best prevention and treatment were discussed. Results The upper arm amputation in 2 cases(7.4%). Shoulderdisarticulation in 3 cases(11.1%). Thigh amputation in 15 cases(55.6%), and lower leg amputation in 7 cases(25.9%). The causes of amputation were primarily serious destroy damage in 15 cases(55.6%), secondly Osteofascial compartment syndrome in 8 cases(29.6%), and gas gangrene in 4 cases(14.8%). 3 of the 27 inpatient cases died (11.1%) and the rest were stump healing. Conclusion Appropriate and prompt management of severe limb trauma patients, correct timing of amputation are key important in reducing mortality and complications. |
